Sukarman is one of the oldest miners at forty-nine, and has been working there for 35 years. He adamantly refuses to let his children pursue the same path as Anto, Purnomo or himself.
The film follows him as he makes every possible effort to create a better life for his children. His story culminates as he invests the entirety of his life savings to open a small shop for his daughter to manage. He’s thankful that within his lifetime he has been able to provide a glimmer of hope for his family. Nevertheless, we watch him continue to climb Kawah Ijen with trembling knees, knowing that his years as a sulfur miner are approaching an end.
